sunny day, back when animals could talk to each other, Squirrel saw
birds flying above her and wondered why she couldn't be up there with
her "friends." Then she saw that birds had feathers and she didn't.
she had an idea that would make her fly. She hollered out to one of the
birds, and said, "Hey you, the chubby one! Come over here and talk to
over-weight bird came over, ignoring the horrible words the land
creature had said to him. "What did you want, Madame?" asked the bird.
His name was Robin.
"I was wondering if you could, well, maybe, teach me something new. I will give you something in return," responded Squirrel.
"Well, because you did call me a chubby bird, I don't know. What would I get in return?"
"I'll bring you ten fat worms after you teach me how to fly!"
said Squirrel, waiting to see Robin's face. She knew Robin wouldn't
want to do anything around her, but she also knew that fat worms made
bird's mouths water. So after a few minutes, Robin decided to help his
furry, sort-of-friend, or at least try. They both decided to meet at
the bottom of the forest's largest spruce tree on top of the largest
hill in two days.
On that day, it was finally the time
Squirrel would be taught how to fly. Squirrel started pacing. She
thought how much fun it would be to fly. Then she stared thinking about
how she would be the first animal, or maybe even the first creature,
who could fly without feathers. She was so excited about flying and
being rich and famous, she didn't see Robin coming. When Robin finally
got to Squirrel, he said in a deep, serious voice, "Why are you just
standing there? I'm hungry. Let's start working."
they got to the top of the hill, they started working right off the
bat. First, Robin showed squirrel how to flap, then he showed her how
to move her tail in a certain way. After two or three hours, they both
were positive that Squirrel could fly. They got to the top of the
spruce tree and Squirrel took a big breath. Then Squirrel jumped and
separated her arms, and realized she was flying. Or maybe just gliding.
Anyway, after she flew away for a while, she saw that she could fly all
along. She just needed to believe in herself and try. Trying helps.
