Once
there was a hunter named Aiuk. Aiuk was practicing his hunting skills
when a message came from his village leader. His village had run out of
food. It is said that every hunter in the village must be put to a
test. The test was to hit every target in the middle. His targets were
made from driftwood and carved into caribou, moose, walrus, seal,
whale, black bear, brown bear and polar bears.
Aiuk was only 20 years old and he won the test. Aiuk packed up his
stuff, said good-bye to his village and was on his way. In two hours
Aiuk found a pack of three seals. Aiuk threw a spear to the middle of
the iceberg the pack was on. Aiuk pulled the rope that he had attached
to the spear and pulled the iceberg ashore. Aiuk took out his hunting
knife and killed all three seals. Aiuk skinned the seals, put the seal
meat in his hunting bag and went on for three more hours.
But a polar bear smelled the seal meat nearby and started walking
toward the scent. When the polar bear attacked Aiuk killed that as
well. Aiuk decided that he had enough food for now. When Aiuk returned
home everyone was as happy as could be. From that day forward Aiuk's
village never ran out of food again.
